Okay, it may seem clich. But my honeymoon was probably the best three weeks of my life. Where did my husband and I decamp to? A destination totally off the beaten path. We went to Iceland. Yes, Iceland. And far before the tiny, island countrys economy totally disintegrated. Our time was a totally enchanted one, complete with incredible views of volcanic craters, warm soaks in sulfur-rich hot springs, glaciers, geysers, lava flows and a strange hovering midnight sun. Not the standard honeymoon vacation, but it was a honeymoon both my husband and I had were each desperate for. You see, as a college student, Id once taken off to Rejkivaek for the weekend at the urgings of an over-indulged girlfriend. My husband spent one summer in Iceland studying architecture. Each of us had fallen in love with the odd little country of just three-hundred thousand. Each of us felt a peculiar little nostalgic attachment to our memories spent sitting at midnight having drinks, looking out over the countrys disorienting daylight. Our honeymoon was not a honeymoon most Americans would have chosen but it was a honeymoon that suited us. It captured certain memories. It captured a certain romance.
